Mini Review Saturday: Young Adult Fiction

Hey Everyone,

Today's mini review compilation are reviews of some young adult books I have read over the last couple years. So let's dive right into it!

Title: Fathomless
Author: Jackson Pearce
Publication Year: 2013
Publisher: Hodder Children's Books
Goodreads Link:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17928815-fathomless
Sentence Summary: Celia has always felt her ability to see people's pasts was unimportant until the day she meets the mysterious Lo but how can her gift help this interesting girl?
Mini Review: I first heard of this book off a booktuber who was doing a read along of mermaid books. Once she described the story and said that is a retelling of "The Little Mermaid" I was straight away convinced that I needed to read it. This is my first Jackson Pearce book read and her third fairytale retelling. I found this book to be quite good but of course it had some slight flaws. It was a bit of a slow read and build up in the beginning as it set up the two different worlds of the main characters and so it was difficult to understand the multiple perspectives at first. This of course changed once I got further into the book and the story started to unravel more. I really enjoyed the story as it was a fascinating take on the common idea of Mermaids. I haven't read any books about mermaids before besides the Hans Christian Andersen version of The Little Mermaid and so this was an intriguing change to that. It was fascinating to read from both a human perspective and a mermaid perspective of the same events as they were both really different. I also really enjoyed the writing as it had such a beautiful tone throughout the novel even through the intense moments. Pearce was able to keep a fairytale atmosphere around the story despite taking a classic story and giving it a dark twist. Although in saying all of this, the ending could of been a little bit better but it was still a satisfying conclusion. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and would definitely love to check out her other fairytale retellings.
Star Rating: 4/5 Stars!

Title: The Fault In Our Stars
Author: John Green
Publication Year: 2012
Publisher: Penguin
Goodreads Link:

Sentence Summary: Everyone thought Hazel wouldn't live into her teens when she was diagnosed with cancer at 12 but now 16 she finds that there might be more to her life then just dying.
Mini Review: I first heard about this book from my best friend who was a big John Green fan before I even knew who he was. I wasn't too interested in his books until I started to be constantly bugged by people to read this one. I finally picked it up and I must say I actually really enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I really loved reading about the relationship between Hazel and Augustus and found it so cute and wonderful. They go through so much in such a short span of time that I found myself really admiring them as characters for being able to stay together despite the hardships they faced. Unfortunately I wasn't so emotionally drained from the book (as many people were when reading it) due to being spoiled on what happens by others before I started reading. Because of this I then knew what to expect rather than being surprised. I probably would of liked it more if I didn't know what was going to happen and so it did take away from the experience. Nonetheless I did love this book and just simply flew through it even though I was going through a tough time at the time I was reading it. John Green has beautiful writing which I hope to continue to see in his other books which I plan to read. Also the movie adaptation of this book is HEARTBREAKING just like this book and everyone should watch it. It was very true to the book which was awesome.
Star Rating: 4.5/5 Stars!

Title: Trouble
Author: Non Pratt
Publication Year: 2014
Publisher: Walker Books Ltd
Goodreads Link:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18138917-trouble
Sentence Summary: Hannah's world is turned upside down when she discovers she's pregnant but what she doesn't understand is why the new boy in town, Aaron offers to pretend to be the father.
Mini Review:I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! I'm not too sure where I first heard about this book but when I saw it in the store and read what it was about I immediately had to buy it. This book is so much more than just a contemporary read as there is a deeper underlining message of sacrifice, dedication and commitment. I loved the twists and the mystery of each character and their connections to one another that were slowly revealed throughout the story. There is so many questions that go unanswered until the very end that just want you to keep reading, such as who is the real father? and why does Aaron offer to be the father? There is something about teen pregnancy stories that I enjoy reading in books, but I must admit that this one was completely different to anything I've read before. I really enjoyed the dual perspectives and writing style of the book as it so easy to get into and follow that I simply flew through the book. The ending was also short and simple which was great and I thought was perfect for the story. This is definitely now one of my favourite books and something that I know I could read over and over again. I highly recommend this to everyone as it a great read about friendship and love. I will probably read anything Non Pratt writes if it is anything like this one.
Star Rating: 5/5 Stars!

So those are my reviews of some really awesome Young Adult books I have read. Let me know if there are some YA books that you enjoyed that I should check out and review.

I hope you are all having a wonderful day!
