Mini Review Saturday: Non-Fiction Books

 Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to start by saying thank you to you all for understanding that I couldn't get this post done in time for yesterday but I'm glad I was able to post it today for you all. Today's mini review compilation are reviews of some of the non-fiction books that I have read over the last few years. So let's dive right into it!

Title: The Alphabet of the Human Heart: The A to Zen of Life
Author: Matthew Johnstone & James Kerr
Publication Year: 2009
Publisher: Pan Macmillan Australia
Goodreads Link:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8101382-the-alphabet-of-the-human-heart
Sentence Summary: An A to Z look at the good and bad things in life and ways to push through the trials to remain positive.
Mini Review: I actually discovered this book at work as I was cleaning up the self-help section. I was immediately drawn the cover and as I started flipping through it, I found it was a very interesting type of self help book. At the time that I finally decided to read it, I was in a bit of a reading slump due to certain things that were happening in my life at that moment. I really needed something to pick me up and this book was a great help. Filled with beautiful illustrations that express both the positive and negative feelings, I began to feel inspired and guided towards what I need to do next. The format of the book is also quite amazing as one half of the book is the positive side and then you flip the book over to read the negative side. This format was great as they both ended on the same note to show that everything is connected which was interesting to see. It is quite a short book with little text but once I finished, I did feel much better than I did when I started it which was just what I needed at the time of reading it. I have now read a few of Matthew Johnstone's books and have enjoyed that but I must say that this one would definitely have to be my favourite so far. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a little pick me up as It did help me a lot.

Title: Life In Five Seconds
Author: Matteo Civaschi & Gianmarco Milesi
Publication Year: 2012
Publisher: Quercus
Goodreads Link:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16108255-life-in-five-seconds
Sentence Summary: A wordless and quick look at the pop culture world including celebrities, inventions and other important events.
Mini Review: I found out about Life In Five Seconds through a customer at work who was asking about it and wanted to order it in. When it arrived at the store I thought it looked really cool and was such a different way at looking at things from history and life. I straight away got a copy for myself and read it in the same day. I simply just flew through this wonderful little pop culture/history book as it is wordless so it's just viewing the photos and connecting them to the actual event/thing labelled. I found it to be so creative and full of so much humour that I found myself laughing at some of the graphics. I actually used this book as a game with my family and friends as we had to figure out what the pictures were before we could look at the word. It was so much fun to play and funny to see what some people came up with. I really liked this book as It was a clever way at looking at things using simple figures. I would definitely recommend this if you're looking for a good laugh.

Title: The History of the World According to Facebook
Author: Wylie Overstreet
Publication Year: 2011
Publisher: It Books
Goodreads Link:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12745053-the-history-of-the-world-according-to-facebook
Sentence Summary: A brief look at the history of the world told exclusively through Facebook statuses and comments.
Mini Review: Everyone has seen those funny fictional facebook statuses that reference books, movies and TV but what about a whole book filled with those type of statuses that are all about history. I found this book in the humour section and immediately knew I had to buy it. Like everyone else, I loved seeing the fictional statuses on my news feed and so I was excited to find this book especially because its about history. I really enjoyed reading this book as it gives a brief yet informative look at moments in history such as the titanic sinking, world war II and even the story of Adam and Eve. By having the book laid out in the form of a facebook page, it adds a bit of humour to each moment, even when some of the events that are covered are quite tragic, it helps keep the mood of the book light. I enjoy reading about history and so I found this book really fun and quite accurate. I also found myself learning about new events as well despite the book's format. I would recommend this to anyone interested in history or even to those who want to know more about history but don't want to have to read a textbook.
Star Rating: 4/5 Stars!

So those are my reviews of some really cool non-fiction books I have read. Sorry again that this post is late and I hope there won't be another late post for a while. Also let me know if there are some other non-fiction books that you enjoyed that I should check out and review.

I hope you are all having a wonderful day!

~Louise
